How can I see what this person went to prison for?

The guy my sister is dating is more than 20years her elder and has recently been released from prison. My family would REALLY like to know what he did time for, but my sister is tight lipped. I just want to know if he is the type of person I can trust around my kids. I am looking for websites that allows access to criminal court records.
I have tried the court .gov sites, and have come up empty. Please help.
